Alamo Heights Junior School Athletic Guidelines
2007 - 2008
Our Goal:
At Alamo Heights Junior School, our athletic goal is to help each individual understand her current fitness and skill level. Using self-motivation and self-responsibility we will help guide each individual in developing and obtaining goals to raise her fitness and skill level in the focused sport.
Team Philosophy: (Volleyball & Basketball)
Blue and Gold: To develop individual and team skills to a competitive level. Practice time is equal for all students. Practices are daily either before or after school depending on grade level. Individual skill level, attendance, attitude, and coachability determine playing time. Each team will play all the schools in our conference once. Saturday tournaments will be played twice during the season for Blue & Gold teams.
White: The focus of the developmental white team is to improve individual and team skills. All individuals will have the opportunity to play against another school in a scrimmage. White team will be limited to 20 kids to begin the season. Individual skill level, attendance, attitude, and coach- ability determine playing time. ALL PRACTICES ARE MANDATORY to continue on the team because there will only be a few outside of class practices.
Track team: There is no Blue & Gold for track; it is all one team. Kids try out by events. The focus will be to prepare kids for track competition in high school, and to use this sport for off-season conditioning for all sports. We require everyone in athletics to participate in track as part of class.
Necessary Materials:
- A.H.J.S. P.E./Athletic uniforms ($16.00)
It is a school policy that all students purchase a Physical Education / Athletics
uniform, as well as provide socks and tennis shoes. Any AH Athletic T-shirt and only the P.E./Athletic uniform shorts may be worn during class and practice.
- Deodorant- must be kept in locker, (non-aerosol container.)
- Lock – will be provided by school, Student is responsible if lost or stolen.

- Container for jewelry to keep in locker. (no jewelry can be worn during class or practice)
- Hair ties - Hair must be worn in a ponytail.
Practice Information:
Everyone who makes a team is required to be at all scheduled practices for that team. In case of emergency and or illness, you’re required to notify the coach as soon as possible. Make up for missed practices will be given to each player at the beginning of that season. Please be prompt to every team practice- 15 minutes early to warm up and stretch.
- 7th grade Blue and Gold teams will practice together in the morning before school each day. (6:45am through first period athletics.)
- 8th grade Blue and Gold teams will practice together after school daily, (3:30 to 5:30pm and during athletics.)
- 7th and 8th grade White teams will have scheduled practices outside of the school day. Times will vary according to gym space availability. All White teams practice during athletics daily.
- TRACK practice schedule will vary between AM and PM. Track practice is mostly during the athletic period. The season runs from March through end of April.
- TENNIS is totally separate from Athletic classes.
- If you are injured, you should still come to practice to watch and learn.
Team Policies:
- A physical from your doctor is due no later than August 16th for 7th graders. This physical is good for 2 years, but must be on UIL official form. 8th graders must fill out the front of the physical form each year.
- A “C” average or better is required in all classes to remain part of any team. Unacceptable classroom conduct, office referrals, or frequent detentions will be considered unacceptable to remain on any athletic team.
- Participation is required unless written note from parent is given to the coach. A parent note is good for only 3 days; after that a doctor’s note is required. A written assignment can be given in place of participation in activity. In the case that a student is excused by parent or a doctor, she must still suit up unless physically unable.
- Each athlete is asked to participate to the best of her ability. A positive attitude towards all coaches and athletes is a must in Athletics.
- Athletes are considered to be role models at our school. Appropriate conduct is required at all times. (before, during, and after school) Inappropriate conduct could result in removal from Athletics.
- Athletics is considered to be an advanced class.
- By choosing to enter this class, you are making a commitment to Jr. School athletic teams. School sports come first over outside activities.
Team Money: Volleyball and Basketball will have money due at the beginning of the season for snack at each game. Volleyball $35 is due, which includes fee for team socks, Basketball, $25. All money is due the first week of practice. T-shirts for each sport will be sold for kids to wear on game days.

If you are interested in helping, please let one of the coaches know. Above all a parent’s positive encouragement for all the athletes is appreciated. We applaud all your efforts in supporting your child’s involvement in our program.
Thank you for your time, and we look forward to working with you and your daughter this year in Athletics. Our program’s success depends upon everyone (parents, players, and coaches) working together.
