Charles Babbage was one of the smartest people who ever lived. He was a century ahead of his time because he was so smart. He was a mathematician by occupation and he was always working on plans for a modern computer.
The first invention by Babbage was a small, hand held eight-digit calculator that was very precise. Then he made a bigger machine picture--never perfect because the wheels were not exactly the same. Even though his calculations were correct, no one could make the wheels just right. If they could have made the wheels, the machine would be one of the biggest changes in the world.
I got all of this information from the biography of Charles Babbage by Elbert B. Hutstan
