Background

Jane Long is known as the "Mother of Texas." Jane had a tragic life and showed her spirit for Texas. She was a person who never gave up no matter how many sad things happened to her. She was a true pioneer woman. When Jane was one year old, her father died, and her mother moved to Mississippi. Her mother died fourteen years later. After that Jane went to live with Barbara and Alexander Calvit at the Propinquity Plantation. She met James Long there.

Early Years

Jane and James were married on May 14, 1815. Ann Herbert Long was born on November 26, 1816. They traveled to Natchez. James became involved with a group of men interested in forming an expedition to Texas. Dr. Long was chosen to lead the expedition and left Jane behind. Rebecca Long was born on June 16, 1819. Jane, Kian, the maid, and the children started on the journey to Texas when Rebecca was twelve days old. This was while James was at war.

Later Years

Jane became ill on her journey to join her husband. She stayed with her sister until she recovered and then left Rebecca and Ann with her sister while she traveled on to Texas. Rebecca died a month later. The Longs traveled back to Louisiana to get Ann and went to live at Point Bolivar near Galveston, Texas. Jane claimed to have dined with Jean Laffiette. James left Jane alone again and went to war in 1821. Then Mary James Long was born on April 8, 1822. Mary James was the first Anglo American born in Texas. Jane became known as the "Mother of Texas." Mary James died in the summer of 1824. Ann grew up and got married. Jane had a hard life. She was buried in a peaceful cemetery in Richmond,Texas.
