Early Years

Anastasia was born on June 18,1901, at Peterhof on the Baltis sea, in the country of Russia. Her royal parents were quite disappointed that she wasn't a boy. Only male heirs were allowed to reign in Russia and the family did not have a son, only four daughters. The Tsar and Tsarina were at least satisfied to have a beautiful healthy baby. Her parents named her Anastasia, meaning reborn, because they had borne another daughter. When she was two weeks old she was baptized. Her official title was "Her Imperial Highness, the Grand Duchess Anastasia Nicholaievna."

Middle Life

When Anastasia was two years old, her brother Alexei was born. The Tsar of Russia finally had an heir. They had to keep a secret, though. Alexei had hemophilia, a disease in which the blood does not clot correctly. Alexei's disease did not seem to affect Anastasia`s joyful childhood. She loved to paint and draw with her Aunt Olga. Anastasia was always Aunt Olga`s favorite niece because they were both artistic. Aunt Olga nicknamed her Shibvik, which means Imp in English. Anastasia was somewhat of a tomboy. She loved to make others laugh, and she was famous in her family for masterminding pranks. Most of Anastasia`s pranks were on her unsuspecting tutors. Anastasia had a quick temper also. When she got mad, she would get red blotches on her face and arms, just like her mother.

Late Life

When Anastasia was sixteen years old, the Monarchy of Russia was overthrown. The royal family was taken to a prison home in Ekaterenberg. Anastasia was immediately separated from her parents and her sister Marie for a couple of months. When the family was reunited, they were forced to stay in a white, run down house in Tobolsk. Whenever the family went outside, they were teased and made fun of by the townspeople. This was such a different treatment than the family was used to, but they stood tall and showed pride in themselves anyway. July 16,1918, just after her 17th birthday, Her Imperial Highness, the Grand Duchess Anastasia, was murdered in the cellar of the prison home.
