Background

Beatrix Potter was one of the most popular children's author ever. She was born in England. Her parents were Rupert and Helen. When she was six her brother Bertram was born. Beatrix was shy, but she loved animals. She collected fossils, bones, and drew pictures of plants and animals. Beatrix's dad took her to see a famous artist at his studio and encouraged her art. All of this encouragement payed off when she started to sell her water color paintings.

Famous Books

Something that helped her start her career was when she wrote to a child. She didn't have anything to say so she told him a story about four little rabbits and their names were Flopsy, Mopsy, Cotton-tail, and Peter. Do these names sound familiar? Yes, Beatrix Potter wrote The Tale of Peter Rabbit and lots of other popular children books. After finding out that her illustrated stories might become something special she privately published The Tale of Peter Rabbit. Seeing her success Frederick Warne & Co. started to publish all of her books.

Late Years

In 1905 Beatrix got engaged to her publisher's son, but a few months later he died. Later, in 1913, she married William Heelis even though her parents disapproved. After a while she stopped writing. Even though she always wanted to be a scientist, (it was hard for women then) she was proud that her books were so popular. After Beatrix died, the British National Trust left her home the way it was.
