Chamberlain was born on September 8, 1828. He grew up in Brewer, Maine. His father, Joshua, wanted him to join the military, and his mother wanted him to join the church. Chamberlain didn't find either very interesting, so he became a professor at Bowden College. When the Civil war broke out he volunteered to fight for the Union. He was given command of the 20th Maine Regiment. His real name is Lawrence Joshua Chamberlain.

He is most famous for his battle at Gettysburg. The Battle of Gettysburg lasted three days. On the first day the Union was outnumbered and defeated. Reinforcements came, but the day was over. One the second day both sides did well. Chamberlain's orders were to take a hill with great range called Little Round Top. This hill is the most important part of the battlefield, but a Union commander made a mistake that the Confederates took advantage of. On the third day the confederates made a risky charge that failed and lost the battle, and was the turning point of the war.

After the war Chamberlain went back to Bowden College and taught every subject except math. He was elected governor of Maine by the largest majority vote in the state's history. Thirty years later he received a medal for his bravery at Gettysburg. His wife Fanny died on 1905 and Chamberlain died in 1914 at age
