When you look at the sky at night you sometimes see millions of twinkling stars. Did you know that the sun is really a medium-sized star? The sun looks big to us, because it is the star closest to the earth.
Scientists classify stars by their color. Stars that glow blue are the hottest. Cooler stars are white or yellow. Red-glowing stars are the coolest stars of all. Scientists call our sun a yellow dwarf star.
What makes up the Sun? Like all stars, the Sun
is a huge ball of gas. The two main gases found in the Sun are hydrogen and
helium. You could say that hydrogen is the Sun’s fuel. Tiny hydrogen
particles crash together to form helium. This process is called Nuclear Fusion.
Nuclear fusion creates sunshine and releases tremendous amounts of heat and
light which is necessary for life on earth. Heat and light produce energy.
The energy from the Sun produces our wind and weather.
