The Sun Described

The sun is the center of our solar system. Even though the Sun is only a medium-size star, it is still the largest object in our solar system. The Sun is HUGE compared to the size of the Earth. If the Sun were a hollow ball, you could fit about one million Earths inside it.

The Sun has been around for a very long time. It is 4.5 billion years old. The Sun is 93 million miles from the Earth. If you could drive a car to the Sun going 60 miles an hour it would take you about 176 years to reach the Sun!

The center or core of the sun is the hottest part of the Sun. The temperature of the core is 27 million degrees Fahrenheit! The temperature of the sun's surface is around 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit and is the coolest part of the Sun. That is still 100 times as hot as one of our hottest days.
