Directions for burning backup CDs - Windows
- Before burning your CD, you should have created a folder on your desktop that contains all the documents you want to backup/save. The folder should be titled “ your last namebackup20078” (for example: Baumlbackup2008 ).
- Place your blank CD-R or CD-RW in the CD drive.
- A new window will automatically open. You will see “Open Writable CD folder” highlighted. Click “OK”. A new window will open. Don't do anything to that window just yet! (If you happen to close the window, simply double-click on My Computer and open the D drive.)
- If burning your CD at your classroom computer, drag the backup file from your desktop to the D drive window that is open on your desktop.
- Now, you will see your backup file in the D drive window. You should also see a list of options on the left part of the D drive window. Click on “Write these files to CD”.
- If you don't see a list of options on the left part of the D drive window, then right click your mouse in the D drive window. Drag down and highlight the option that says “Write these files to CD”.
- A wizard window will automatically open. Rename your CD (example: Baumlbackup2008 ). Keep clicking on “next”. The data will begin to be burned to your CD. When finished, remove your CD from the drive.
- You can write the name of the CD on the outside of the CD with a sharpie. Put the CD in a safe place!
- Warning: do not copy the My Documents folder; it is a shortcut. You must open the My Documents folder and copy the files within it.
Additional directions for burning the CD in the lab:
- If you plan to burn the CD in the lab, you need to copy your backup folder from your desktop to your personal folder on Thor (for example, Lori Bauml would save her backup folder to the “lbauml” drive located by opening My Computer).
- Log on as you do in your classroom. Then, take out the KidKeys CD that is in the CD drive. Place the CD on top of the hard drive upside down until you are done. (When your CD is burned, be sure to put the Kid Keys CD back in the CD drive before you log out.)
- Double click My Computer. Open your drive (e.g., the “lbauml” drive). Now you have 2 windows open. Drag your backup folder to the D drive window that is already open on your desktop.
