AHISD Letter 03/02/20

Updated 03/02/2020

Dear Alamo Heights Families,

By now you have probably seen national, state, and local media coverage of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). Alamo Heights ISD continues to actively monitor the situation. Like you, the safety and well being of our students, staff and community is very important to us.

The Texas Department of State Health Services (TDSHS) is the state authority on all information about the spread of the novel coronavirus, and they work locally with San Antonio Metropolitan Health to communicate and coordinate public health efforts. Public health officials have stated that the risk to our school community is low at this time.

AHISD follows recommendations from public health officials to take the same steps to protect against coronavirus as taken to prevent the spread of everyday illnesses such as the common cold or the flu.  To assist with these efforts, we ask our community to follow these important strategies:

Important Health Strategies:

·       Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

·       Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.

·       Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.

·       Cover your cough and sneeze in the bend of your elbow or a tissue

·       Dispose of tissues in the trash.

·       If you’ve not already gotten one, a flu shot is encouraged.

·       Stay home when sick

For families who might be traveling abroad during spring break, the US Department of State issues travel bans and warnings to ensure the safety of all travelers. Traveling out of town over spring break does not automatically increase a risk of exposure to others upon your return, but it is important to consult government travel advisories. To receive updated Travel Advisories and Alerts, choose the method that works best for you at travel.state.gov/stayingconnected.

Alamo Heights ISD will continue to follow all local, state, and national advisories to include San Antonio Metropolitan Health in conjunction with the Texas DSHS and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

We will continue to monitor this situation as it develops and to work with our local public health officials and communicate updates.  As always, our focus remains on the health and safety of our students, staff and community.

Sincerely,

Dr. Dana Bashara

Superintendent of Schools
