Superintendent

Dr. Brown came to Alamo Heights ISD in July 2000 and has served as Superintendent of Schools since July 2008. Since being named Superintendent, he successfully led AHISD through a major, collaborative strategic planning process to ensure the district’s tradition of excellence continues, as well as collaboratively developed the AHISD Profile of a Learner, which describes the characteristics and attributes we desire for our 21st century students.



Dr. Brown began his career teaching social studies at Southwest High School in San Antonio and continued at McNeil High School in Round Rock. In his first year at Southwest, he was named Teacher of the Year (1992). He spent five years in New Braunfels ISD as an assistant principal and principal at both the elementary and secondary levels and received the Silver Unicorn Award. Dr. Brown has also taught graduate courses at Texas State University as an adjunct professor and has guest lectured at Trinity University.



While earning his undergraduate degree in Government with Honors from the University of Texas at Austin in 1989, he was a member of the University of Texas Longhorn Band, serving as president for one year and trumpet section leader for four years. It was there that he met his future wife, Page. Dr. Brown earned his Master’s Degree in Education Administration from Texas State University in 1996 and was selected as the Outstanding Graduate Student in the College of Education. In 2004, he earned a Doctorate in Education Administration from Texas A&M University. His doctoral research focused on the talents and qualities of effective teachers and how they can be identified for selection.


Raised in San Marcos, Texas, since the age of 7, he graduated from San Marcos High School in 1985. While at SMHS, he was a 3-year All-State musician, lettered in Basketball, Tennis, Band, and Choir, and graduated in the top 5% of his class, receiving the San Marcos High School Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2012. Although he was raised in San Marcos, his family has deep roots in the education and business communities in San Antonio, and his wife, Page, was born and raised in San Antonio. 


Currently, he serves in numerous leadership capacities at the state-level including:
President, Texas Association of School Administrators
President, Texas School Coalition
Member, Legislative Council for the U.I.L.
Steering Committee, Go Public Campaign

Past leadership roles include: Chairman of the Region 20 Superintendent Advisory Committee; Executive Board of the Texas Association of Mid-Size Schools; Board of Directors for the Alamo Heights Rotary Club; Past-President of the San Antonio Association of Personnel Administrators and Executive Board for the Texas Association of School Personnel Administrators (TASPA). In 2015, he was named Region 20 Superintendent of the Year and was a finalist for Texas Superintendent of the Year. He also actively participates and advocates at the state and national levels to help transform public schools to better meet the needs of 21st Century learners.

Family and friends are very important to Dr. Brown. He is proud of his wife, Page (attorney and filmmaker), and their two daughters - Hannah (Texas Tech music education major) and Molly (Alamo Heights High School). He also enjoys exercising regularly, fly-fishing and hiking in Colorado, and especially attending Alamo Heights competitions.

Dr. Brown has a passion for public education and believes that quality teachers and a supportive community are critical components to the success of children and to the continued success of our democratic way of life. He is particularly passionate about the Alamo Heights community, schools, staff and students. Go Mules!
