Superintendent

Dr. Brown came to Alamo Heights ISD in July 2000 and has served as Superintendent of Schools since July 2008.  Previous to being named superintendent, he was the Director of Personnel and Public Information for the district. Since being named Superintendent, he has led AHISD through a major, collaborative strategic planning process to ensure the district’s tradition of excellence continues.

Dr. Brown began his career teaching American History, Government, Sociology, Psychology, and Student Leadership at Southwest High School in San Antonio.  In his first year at Southwest, the faculty and students selected him as Teacher of the Year (1992).  After marrying Page, his college sweetheart from the UT Longhorn Band, Dr. Brown moved to McNeil High School in Round Rock, where he taught AP Macroeconomics and served as the Social Studies Department Chair. He then served as an assistant principal in New Braunfels ISD at the elementary and high school levels and as the principal at Carl Schurz Elementary for the three years previous to coming to AHISD. Carl Schurz, a Title I school, earned TEA Recognized Status in 1999-2000.  Dr. Brown has also taught graduate courses at Texas State University as an adjunct professor.

He earned his undergraduate degree in Government with Honors from the University of Texas at Austin in 1989. While in college he was a member of the University of Texas Longhorn Band, serving as president for one year and trumpet section leader for four years. He earned his Master’s Degree in Education Administration from Texas State University in 1996, and was selected as the Outstanding Graduate Student in the College of Education. In 2004, he earned a Doctorate in Education Administration from Texas A&M University. His doctoral research focused on the talents and qualities of effective teachers and how they can be identified for selection.
Raised in San Marcos, Texas since the age of 7, he graduated from San Marcos High School (Go Rattlers!) in 1985.  While at SMHS, he was a 3-year All-State musician, lettered in Basketball, Tennis, Band, and Choir, and graduated in the top 5% of his class. He still has family in San Marcos.

Although he was raised in San Marcos, his family has deep roots in the education and business communities in San Antonio, and his wife Page was born and raised in San Antonio.
Currently, he serves as President of the Texas School Coalition; Chairman of the Region 20 Superintendent Advisory Committee; Executive Board of the Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA); Executive Board of the Texas Association of Mid-Size Schools; and Board of Directors for the Alamo Heights Rotary Club.  He is also Past-President of the San Antonio Association of Personnel Administrators and served on the Executive Board for the Texas Association of School Personnel Administrators (TASPA).

Family and friends are very important to Dr. Brown, and he also enjoys exercising each day, playing tennis and golf, fly-fishing in Colorado, attending Alamo Heights ISD competitions and events, following Longhorn sports, and reading.

Dr. Brown has a passion for public education and believes that quality teachers and a supportive community are critical components to the success of children, and to the continued success of our democratic way of life.
