Alamo Heights ISD is committed to keeping the community informed about the work of the Board of Trustees. This board summary highlights the action and recognitions from the latest Regular Meeting of the Board of Trustees.


Recognitions


Spotlight on Excellence 

Xavier Perez-Escudero, Assistant Custodial Supervisor, was honored as the April Spotlight on Excellence recipient.


Student Council

Dylan Corso, Co-President of the Alamo Heights High School Student Council, shared the April update with Trustees. Student Council is planning for the Talent Show on May 12 and the last ‘First Friday’ event of the year on May 5. 


Other Board Action and Presentations  


Melissa Benavidez, Director of Special Education, presented a special education program review. She highlighted supports and services, a TEA audit, and special education trends and enrollment. 


Dr. Jimmie Walker, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction, presented an update on the district’s development of a local plan for the state’s Teacher Incentive Allotment. She presented an overview of the program and timeline to implement in AHISD.


Trustees heard about two requests that were previously approved by the Superintendent for a high school student trip to Costa Rica in July 2024 and a high school choir trip to Orlando in March 2024.


A report was presented on Board Member Continuing Education Requirements. All AHISD Trustees have fulfilled the requirements.  


Trustees approved a resolution in support of Texas Public Schools as the most effective means of empowering students and instilling civic pride for the betterment of the great state of Texas. The full version of the resolution can be found HERE.


Trustees approved the naming of the Cambridge Elementary iLab after Lou Celia and Don Frost in recognition of a gift to the Alamo Heights School Foundation Endowment. They also approved the naming of the Art Gallery at Alamo Heights HS after Elizabeth Huth Coates in recognition of a gift to the Alamo Heights School Foundation Endowment.


Trustees approved the renewal of the food service management contract with Southwest Foodservice Excellence, LLC.


Donations were accepted from: Woodridge Elementary PTO; Athletic Department; Toney E. and Laura Stephenson; Howard PTO; and Abbas Selgi Terra Nova Violins.The accepted donations totaled $112,249.68.


Trustees accepted reports from the Assessment and Long Range Planning, Building Policy, and Goals and Priorities committees; District Design Team; District Education Advisory Council; and Alamo Heights School Foundation.


Superintendent’s Communication


Dr. Bashara highlighted several celebrations from the past month that included the AHISD Job Fair hosted at the end of March, the many concerts that are being hosted to showcase our music students including the piano recital, our percussion recital as well as the Annual Strings Festival where the district recognized 50 years of the Strings Program in AHISD. Additionally, Athletic accomplishments were highlights that included Track, Golf, Softball and Baseball.


Additional updates were provided related to Bond 2023, Safety and Security and Staffing.
