AHISD Letter 03/13/20

March 13, 2020

Dear AHISD Families,

All schools in the Alamo Heights ISD will extend Spring Break for one more week during  March 16- March 20 while we continue to monitor the situation and health department recommendations.

As communicated yesterday, we are diligently monitoring the COVID-19 (novel Coronavirus) situation.  Throughout this past week, we have been working closely with local and state health departments as well as monitoring the recommendations of the CDC.  This afternoon, Bexar County Superintendents participated in a conference call with Metro Health to discuss updates, challenges, and future plans for our public schools.  As a result of this meeting, and out of an abundance of caution to prevent the spread of the virus, schools will be closed through March 20th. We will be meeting weekly to assess the current situation and will communicate updates as soon as they are available.

Information around this pandemic is evolving and changing rapidly, and we are committed to being thoughtful and responsive to the information that is shared. By extending our Spring Break, we are providing our school community with extra time  to cautiously assess the situation after a time of travel both across national and international. This extended break also provides medical/public health officials and the community time to get critical answers regarding incubation period, level and length of contagious status, as well as communication strategies that include all necessary partners.  We want to ensure the safety and wellness of our students and staff, and we want to do our part to slow the spread of this virus and have determined that a closure at this time is a strong preventative response.

As requested in my second community letter on Thursday morning 3/12, A Message to AHISD Families and Staff, we ask that you communicate with our Health Services Coordinator, Kathi Martinez, at (210) 832-5903, if your family has traveled to any of the Level 3 countries over Spring Break.  (Please do so no later than Monday, 3/16).  We also ask that you communicate with Head Nurse Martinez if any of your family tests positive for COVID-19 so we can continue to partner together for support and planning.

The health and well-being of our students and staff is paramount.  In addition, teaching, learning and student academic progress is a priority to which our district is resolutely committed. To that end, we are developing contingency plans for all campuses to use in the event that we need to extend the closure.  We will communicate those plans to you through email.
At this point, we do not anticipate a change to our school calendar due to this closing.

During this extended break, all offices (campus and district )will be closed, and events will be cancelled.  Additionally, we will be making plans to support students who need services through our Child Nutrition Program and will communicate directly with those families.

I am incredibly grateful for our continued partnership in navigating this challenging situation together and am grateful for the trust that you extend as we strive to make the best decisions for our school community.  I am proud that AHISD serves as the heart of our community, and I know that we will continue to share unwavering support and care for one another. To that end, let us be diligent to act with precaution with our own health and serve as models for proactive health practices that our community deserves

AHISD will maintain a COVID-19 website to provide resources to our community. Please visit this site here: Covid-19 Updates
