Kevin Criss, 2024 Alamo Heights ISD Teacher of the Year, is the Region 20 Elementary Educator of the Year.

He was surprised with the news by Region 20 Executive Director Dr. Jeff Goldhorn during the AHISD Convocation ceremony on August 6.

Criss will now represent Region 20 as a nominee for Texas Teacher of the Year.

The Texas State Teacher of the Year (TOY) Program, sponsored by the Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA), honors excellence in classroom education and provides a forum to showcase many outstanding educators whose efforts and example inspire their students, their colleagues and the communities they serve.It is the highest honor the state can bestow upon a teacher. Twenty elementary educators and twenty secondary educators are considered for the honor. The state finalists will be announced later this fall.

Criss is a physical education teacher at Cambridge Elementary. He began his teaching career in Alamo Heights ISD in 2013. In December 2023, he earned National Board Certification, becoming only the second educator in the state to earn the prestigious designation in Early Adolescence through Young Adulthood- Physical Education.

“Kevin is an outstanding PE teacher at Cambridge, with exceptional dedication, passion, and creativity in this role,” says Cambridge Principal Jana Hawkins. “He encourages his students to openly express themselves with humility and vulnerability. I am confident that he will continue to inspire and empower students for years to come.”
