Alamo Heights ISD is committed to keeping the community informed about the work of the Board of Trustees. This board summary highlights the action and recognitions from the latest Regular Meeting of the Board of Trustees.

Organization of Trustees

Newly elected Trustees took the Oath of Office at the beginning of the Board Meeting. Karen Bryant was sworn in to represent Place 2. David Hornberger and Hunter Kingman were sworn in for new terms representing Place 1 and Place 4.

Outgoing Trustee Brian Hamilton was recognized for his years of service to AHISD and the Board of Trustees. He was first elected in 2018.

Trustees selected new officers: Clay Page, President; Carey Hildebrand, Vice President; Ty Edwards, Secretary; and Lauren McLaughlin, Assistant Secretary.

Recognitions

Spotlight On Excellence
Matthew Moreno
, assistant band director at Alamo Heights HS and Alamo Heights Junior School, was honored as the May Spotlight on Excellence recipient.

Powering the Profile
Jaeleen Fullen
, PE Coach at Howard, was recognized for Powering the Profile for embodying the AHISD Profile of a Learner. Visit the AHISD YouTube Channel for a video showing how she empowers our youngest learners to “develop a healthy sense of self.”

State Color Guard
The Winter Guard placed 7th in the Scholastic Regional A Class at the TECA State Competition.

Members are: Mia Allen, Kade Bartlett, Gabriela Buzenas, Livianna de la Pena, Reese Fagan, Ray Govea Godoy, Roxanne Harris, Melody Hinds, Kayla Huynh, Kiera Iruegas, Madeleine Magee, Alana Martinez, Mariah Mayon, Charlotte Miller, Lesly Nacerado, Kianna Rabago and Isabella Villanueva.

UIL State Solo and Ensemble Qualifiers - Band, Orchestra, and Piano
The following students qualified for the UIL State Solo and Ensemble
Contest for Band: Ryker Zepeda, Anjea Santiago, Kiera Iruegas, Eleanor Dibrell, William Montalvo, Julian Mendoza and Andrew Krause.

The following students qualified for the UIL State Solo and Ensemble Contest for Orchestra: Maya Corey, Ben Klopfenstein, Lauren Nash, Lillian Song, Aiden Williams, Elijah Yun, Elaina Kindt, Margaret Stephenson, Cameron Percival, and Chloe Vaupel.

The following student qualified for the UIL State Solo and Ensemble Contest for Piano: Alexis Bley.

UIL State Theatrical Design
Junior Salene Valadez qualified for the UIL State Theatrical Design contest for her set design for Axoloris the Musical. She will compete in the virtual state event later this month.

VASE Medalist
Sophomore Nevaeh De La Fuente qualified for the state Visual Arts Scholastic Event, also called VASE, held at the end of April. She received the highest score for her work, titled “Leo With Taurus Rising.” Her work was judged to be superior and earned her a medal.

UIL Award of Merit and Star Award- Yearbook
The Yearbook received the UIL Award of Distinguished Merit for the 17th straight year. It is the state's highest honor and the gold medal in Publishing.The Yearbook was also nominated for a UIL Star Award for the first time in school history. This honor is reserved for the best of the Distinguished Merit Yearbooks.

Students are: Joseph Angulo, Tessa Bordelon, Henry Archer, Ben Brown, Adelaide Cooper, Caroline Crow, Alexandra Cubeta, Bennett Hughes, Cole Kleck, Pablo Lopez, Emily Rodriguez, Cole Roos, Kallie Schoenbaum, Emma Terr, and Hayden White.

UIL Award of Achievement - Hoof Print
The Hoof Print received the UIL's Award of Achievement which is the state's second highest honor and the silver medal in publishing. Students are: Jocelyn Bezner, Oliver Duffin, Ricky Gonzalez, Mason Gutierrez, Bennett Johnson, Thomas Labatt, Magali Roibon, Simon Stokes-Liss, Beau Taber, Maddie Turner and Maddie Wallis.

UIL State Track and Field Qualifiers
Several athletes represented AHISD at the UIL State Track and Field Meet in Austin.

4x100 relay - Blake Bader, Max Bacon, Atticus Wootton, Patrick Arriaga, Coltrane Kennon, DK Garza, James Lynch - 9th place
100m dash - Blake Bader - 9th place
110m hurdles - Max Bacon - 7th place and broke school record
300m hurdles - Jack Hollimon - 7th place

UIL State Champion Girls Golf Team and Individual State Qualifier
At the end of April, girls golf team and individual qualifiers represented AHISD at the UIL State Golf Tournament at Legacy Hills Golf Club. They are the state champions for the third straight year, and the last four out of five years. They set an all-time state tournament scoring record. They are the number one ranked team (of all classifications) in the state of Texas.

Team members are Abbey Anderson, Lindsay Lee, Jordan Sandoval, Syler Schones and Michelle Lee. Additionally Michelle Lee won the individual bronze medal.

National Qualifiers- U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad
Andy Le
and Ben Klopfenstein both qualified for the National Chemistry Olympiad, held in early April. The event is sponsored by the American Chemical Society. National scores have not been released yet.

UIL Science Team State Qualifiers
Andy Le, Eli Yun, Ben Klopfenstein,
and Lucas Rodriguez qualified for the UIL State Science Team competition after their first place finishes at both District and Regional Competition. Andy also finished as the top overall scorer at District and Regionals in biology, chemistry, and physics.They will compete at the state meet on May 19 at UT Austin.

State Science Olympiad
AHISD was represented at the State Science Olympiad by a team from Alamo Heights HS. They earned second place at the Rio Grande Valley Regional Competition which qualified them for state.

The High School team finished 11th out of 30 teams at the state Competition held at Texas A&M University. They also earned awards in the Chemistry Lab, Wind Power, Bungee Drop, and We’ve Got Your Number events.

Team members are: Elijah Yun, Andy Le, Ana Maria Donahue, Juliette Motamedian, Bennett Hall, Adriana Dippel, Sophia Lathrop,Ben Klopfenstein, Lucas Rodriguez, Gregory Monagas, Piper Smith,Juliana Araujo Rincon, Madelyn Fine, Davis Bratelli, Elanor Yun,Elaina Kindt, and John Fravell.

Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council
The Superintendent's Student Advisory Council is comprised of Alamo Heights High School Juniors, Alamo Heights Junior School 8th graders, and 5th graders from Cambridge and Woodridge Elementary.

Students are: George Whiteside, Easton Guerrero, Julie Tseng-Grau, Blake Hollimon, Dottie Hornberger, June Kingman, Ross McGlothlin, Vivienne Pape, Evelyn Hereford, Michael Huerta, Dred Barr, James Curtis, August Berchelmann, Emily Reno, Ana Morales De Los Santos, Ford Jones, Adele Hamilton, Issac Miller, Presley Stupka, Iliana Recio, Jack Hollimon, Mimi Soupiset, Rachel Olson, Ivan Romanko, Charlotte Voss, Presely Alsabrook, Mariah Garner, Joseph Angulo and Alejandra Zapata.

Substitute Teacher Century Club
The AHISD Substitute Century Club is for substitutes who completed 100 assignments this year. They are: Liz Garcia, Cinthia Menchaca, Sally Reese, Julia Sepeda, Kandis Shugart, James Tally, and Michael Schwarze.

Senior Ambassadors
Senior Ambassadors Ava Carnahan, Daniel Corso, Eleanor Dibrell, Conway Hamilton, Eli Yun, and Julia Zelle have shared their senior story multiple times this year at events for our community.

Student Council
Daniel Corso
, President of the Alamo Heights High School Student Council, shared a final update with Trustees. He introduced 2025-2026 Student Council President Veer Patel and Vice President Lindsey Lam.
 
 

Other Board Action and Presentations   

Trustees received an update on the Teacher Incentive Allotment from Dr. Jimmie Walker, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction.

Matt Streger, Chief Financial Officer, presented a Budget and Compensation Update.

Trustees received an update on Bond 2023 Construction presented by Bond Construction Manager Mike Hagar.

Trustees approved Bartlett Cocke as CMAR General Contractor for Project 3 of Bond 2023 which includes construction at Howard Early Childhood Center and Alamo Heights Junior School.

Trustees approved R.L. Rhode Contracting as contractor for a $1.1 million baseball construction project that includes bleacher and restroom renovations.

Trustees approved fees for LPA Design Studios for Howard Early Childhood Center. The project at Howard is a new building to replace the existing structure.

Trustees approved a canvass of the 2025 General Elections and Staff Development Waivers for 205-2026.

Donations were accepted from: Mule Team; AHHS PTSO; Dr. Amita Kumar and Gabriel Bietz; Alamo Heights School Foundation; and Methodist Healthcare System and John Scott. The accepted donations totaled $167,512.96.

Trustees accepted a report from the Goals and Priorities; Assessment and Long Range Planning; and Building committees; and Alamo Heights School Foundation.

Superintendent's Communication

Dr. Bashara highlighted senior and end of year celebrations, athletic achievements, and a look ahead to summer.
