School Board Recognition Month
January is School Board Recognition Month. The AHISD Board of Trustees was recognized and thanked for their dedication and service to the District. The theme of this year’s School Board Recognition Month is Locally Elected, Community Connected, which highlights the connection between school trustees and their communities. School board members are the largest group of locally-elected officials in the state.
Spotlight on Excellence
Dr. Libby Rokowski and Tim Brown, ACE teachers at Alamo Heights HS, were honored as the January Spotlight on Excellence recipients.
Powering the Profile
Manpreet Behl, 3rd grade teacher at Cambridge, was recognized for Powering the Profile for embodying the AHISD Profile of a Learner. Visit the AHISD YouTube channel for a video showing how she encourages students to “engage socially and globally.”
National Board Certification Teachers
Three Cambridge Elementary teachers have earned National Board Certification, the highest credential in the teaching profession. Julie Draper, Christi Criss, and Kevin Criss are the first teachers to earn this certification while working in AHISD. Currently there are 1,375 National Board Certified Teachers in Texas which equates to less than 1% of Texas teachers.
Campus Teachers of the Year
The 2024 Campus Teachers of the Year were recognized. They are: Sarah Holmes, Alamo Heights HS; John Sheppard, Alamo Heights Junior School; Kevin Criss, Cambridge Elementary; Megan Janak, Woodridge Elementary; and Anna Duce, Howard Early Childhood Center.
District Teacher of the Year
Kevin Criss, PE teacher at Cambridge Elementary, is the 2024 Alamo Heights ISD Teacher of the Year. He will represent AHISD as the district’s nominee for the Trinity Prize for Excellence in Education and Region 20 Teacher of the Year. Learn more about this outstanding educator on the AHISD website.
Student Council
Grace McCormick, President of the Alamo Heights High School Student Council, shared the January update with Trustees.
Other Board Action and Presentations
Trustees approved the 2024-25 school calendar. The calendar was presented by Dr. Frank Alfaro, Assistant Superintendent for Administrative Services. The approved calendar is posted to the AHISD website.
Mike Hagar, Bond Construction Manager, and LPA Design Studio representatives presented a Construction and Bond 2023 Planning Update including the AHHS Schematic Design. The design will be posted on the Bond Construction Updates website.
Dr. Jimmie Walker, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction, and Cory Smith, AHHS Principal, presented a College Action Research Update on the ever evolving college admissions process and class rank.
Trustees approved the addition of four new courses for Alamo Heights High School for the 2024-25 school year- AP Precalculus; Principles of Business, Marketing, and Finance and dual credit courses in Professional Communication and College Transition. The presentation was made by Dr. Walker and Charlotte Dolat, Academic Dean of Alamo Heights High School.
Trustees approved Board Operating Procedures, a property insurance vendor, tree trimming, and the Superintendent’s appraisal and contract.
Donations were accepted from: Alamo Heights Junior School PTO. The accepted donations totaled $1,400.
Trustees accepted reports from the Building, Policy, Budget, Communications, Goals and Priorities, and Assessment and Long Range Planning committees; and Alamo Heights School Foundation.
Alamo Heights ISD will hold an election May 4, 2024 for Place 5, Place 6, and Place 7 Board positions.
