Alamo Heights ISD is committed to keeping the community informed about the work of the Board of Trustees. This board summary highlights the action and recognitions from the latest Regular Meeting of the Board of Trustees.

Recognitions

Spotlight on Excellence 
Jose Hernandez, ISS Monitor at The Junior School, was honored as the October Spotlight on Excellence recipient.

EXCEL Award
Jessica Gonzales, a kindergarten teacher at Howard ECC, is the 2023-24 EXCEL Award winner for Alamo Heights ISD. The EXCEL Award is sponsored by KENS 5 and Credit Human and representatives from both organizations came to surprise Gonzales in her classroom and present her with the apple trophy and $1,000 check.

National Merit
The Board honored students who have been recognized by the National Merit
Scholarship Program and College Board.

Student Council Update
AHHS Student Council President Grace McCormick shared an update with Trustees.

Other Board Action and Presentations

Melissa Benavidez, Director of Special Education and Pupil Services, and Natalie Brown, Assistant Director of Special Education, provided updates on special education programming and the impacts of House Bill 3928.

Dr. Jimmie Walker, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction, and Cory Smith, Alamo Heights High School Principal, presented college credit/college readiness data and the Early College High School and P-TECH programs coming to AHHS beginning in fall of 2024. AHISD was awarded a TEA grant to establish both programs which will be operated in a partnership with St. Philips College but located in AHISD with all AHISD teachers. An Early College High School allows students to earn an Associate of Arts degree while simultaneously earning their high school diploma. Under the P-Tech program, students will also have the opportunity to gain work-based experience and earn an industry certification in the pathway of education. The application will open Nov. 27 for incoming 9th graders and parent information sessions will be offered beginning Oct.25 at AHHS.

Trustees approved a resolution to renew the AHISD District of Innovation Plan, accepted the 2022-23 report on violent and criminal incidents, approved a revision to local policy BED, gave annual approval of the district’s investment policy and investment brokers, and approved the purchase of a new vehicle for the Plant Services Department.

Donations were accepted from: Howard PTO, AHJS PTO, and Athletic Miscellaneous Donations benefiting Swing for the Cure and the swimming and boys soccer programs. The accepted donations totaled $35,381.66.

Trustees accepted reports from the Goals and Priorities, Policy, Budget, Building and Assessment and Long-Range Planning committees and the Alamo Heights School Foundation Board.

Superintendent's Communication

Dr. Bashara shared highlights from the last month including celebrations of staff and Homecoming festivities, an athletics update for teams currently in postseason play, professional development opportunities for staff, and the Ladensohn Lecture with Damon West.

She also recapped the Legislative Update event hosted by AHISD this week for staff and the community with guest speakers from TASA and Raise Your Hand Texas. Representative Steve Allison drove in from Austin to be in attendance.
