Bond 2023 Updates

Alamo Heights ISD voters overwhelmingly approved three bond propositions in May 2023. Bond 2023 will provide updated learning spaces at all campuses, continue to address safety and security, and allow the district to be better community partners with additional parking, improved traffic flow, and outdoor and meeting spaces for community use.

The work will be divided into three project packages. Planning for Package One began in summer/fall 2023. AHISD is committed to sharing regular updates about the design, planning, and construction phases during this exciting time for the district.

The new high school schematic design was shared at the January 2024 Board Meeting. Construction at AHHS is expected to last from May 2024 until August 2026.

Package One also includes the relocation of the Excel Academy and Connects program to the current AHISD Central Office and the construction of a new Central Office/Learning Center for our school community.

May 2026

A busy summer of construction is about to get underway in Alamo Heights ISD!

Before staff left for the summer break, the month of May was a busy time for packing. This year that includes 3 of the five school libraries. The libraries at Cambridge and Woodridge will be refreshed this summer, and the high school library will move from the STEM Building into the new AHHS building.

High school staff also packed up their mods in anticipation of the move to the new building.
It remains on time and on schedule with expected move in for furniture beginning at the end of June. This past month, Trustees and Dr. Bashara toured the new building with Principal Smith.

Cambridge will soon switch to the new Central Plant for HVAC services. The administration, nurse, and counselors offices along with workrooms are all getting a refresh. Work is continuing in the kitchen and dining area which will be ready for the start of school this coming year. Building 4 remodeling will begin later this summer as those classrooms will be in the portables for the fall semester.

At Woodridge, the 5th grade hallway addition/renovation is wrapping up and work is starting in the first and second grade hallways, the main hallway and the administration suite. The portables are being removed and the field will be restored for the students for this coming year.

Looking ahead to June, construction will begin at The Junior School and at the new Central Office/District Community Center. The first set of mods will be removed at the high school in order to resurface that parking lot followed by removing the ones on the field. Once that is complete the field will be resurfaced.

April 2026

After almost two years, we are approaching the end of construction at Alamo Heights High School. Inside the building, terrazzo flooring tile installation is underway for the front entry and up the stairs. Outside, work continues on the front parking lot and sidewalks along Broadway. In the back, work is beginning on the outdoor decks in the Courtyard.

At Cambridge, the classroom refreshes on Building 3 are also nearing completion. (Building 4 will begin in the fall.) The steel structure for the new Central Plant is being erected now.

The 5th grade classroom renovation/addition is nearing completion at Woodridge.

Prep work is getting underway for the summer. For the high school, that’s packing up classroom spaces in the Mods and temporary library and preparing for a move into the new building. This summer at both Cambridge and Woodridge, the main offices will be refreshed and the libraries will be refreshed so all of the books need to be packed. The 1st and 2nd grade classrooms at Woodridge will also see refreshes over the summer. Woodridge bond construction projects will be completed this summer.

Bids are out for the Junior School and District Community Center projects which will both begin in June.

March 2026

March was another busy month of bond construction in AHISD as work continues at AHHS, Woodridge and Cambridge.

The first softball games were held at the new Mule Diamond, part of the AHISD Athletics Complex at Robbins. The new building which houses concessions, restrooms, locker rooms for tennis and softball, coaches offices, and meeting space is also complete. Two additional parking lots are also available off of Ramsey.

After Spring Break, Cambridge Elementary relocated their cafeteria to the Gold Gym while renovations continue on the kitchen/cafeteria.

And finally the new AHHS building continues to be on time and budget and is scheduled to open in August 2026. Most of the work is focused on the interior of the building though landscaping is beginning along with the parking lot in the front of the building.

February 2026

February was another busy month of bond construction in AHISD.

For the first time, the AHHS softball team was able to practice on their new field at the AHISD Athletics Complex at Robbins. They’ll play their first game on the field this week. Work continues on the team meeting space/locker room building, though it’s almost complete.

At the February Board Meeting, Trustees reviewed renderings for construction projects for The Junior School and the new Central Office/Community Center. Both projects should begin this summer. Renderings for the Junior School are on the Package 3 page and renderings for the Central Office/Community Center are on the Package 1 page.

The next set of classroom refreshes was completed at Cambridge. Work on the final set of classrooms in Building 3 is now underway.

And finally the new AHHS building continues to be on time and budget and is scheduled to open in August 2026.

January 2026

In January, the Bond Community Council visited the AHISD Athletic Complex at Robbins to see progress on the softball field. The softball team will begin practicing on the field in February and the first games scheduled on the field are in March. The Council also visited the Visitor’s Bleachers Complex at Orem Stadium and saw the new golf simulators.

Cambridge is adapting to construction in the school kitchen/cafeteria. The kitchen is no longer in use so meals are brought in each day and a temporary serving line has been erected.

Woodridge 5th graders are learning each day in the modular classrooms on campus. Work on the 5th grade hallway expansion and renovation is underway.

The AHHS academic building construction is progressing and is on time to open August of 2026. Brick is complete, air and heat is operational in the north wing, and preliminary landscaping has started.

Updates on the Junior School and the District Community Center projects will be presented to the Board in February.
